GLOBAL NETWORK OF BANGLADESHI BIOTECHNOLOGISTS

GNOBB was born as a web-based organization in 2004 in order to provide a forum for networking of Biotechnologists with origins from Bangladesh. The idea was initiated by Dr. Abidur Rahman and retired Professor of Botany, Dr. Ahmad Shamsul Islam. The website was then launched and coordinated ever since by the latter with oversight from Dr. Abid and rest of the Founder members.

The objective of the organization has been to provide information on the scientific activities of Scientists from all over the world, but who are deeply rooted to Bangladesh. The interactive platform allowed member scientists to upload their latest achievements and publications directly on the website. News of the achievements of Bangladeshi scientists as well as important advances and breakthroughs in Biotechnology have been uploaded regularly on the website. GNOBB has already organized 2 international conferences and plans to organize these and other workshops at regular intervals. The intent here is capacity building and creating awareness on the latest trends in Biotechnology for improvements in Health, Agriculture and the Environment.  One of its achievements is the preparation of the Position paper for the Ministry of Science and Technology, People’s Republic of Bangladesh from its 2007 Conference that eventually paved the way towards the creation of the National Institute of Biotechnology (NIB) under the Ministry’s governance. Another of its goals is to honor outstanding scientists for their achievements. It also aims to show the benefits of Biotechnology to Policy Makers and the Public in general. It also has an outreach branch for undergraduate students called YoungBB. The long term goal of GNOBB is to promote and enhance fellowship among Bangladeshi Biotechnologists so that they can network and collaborate in the use of Biotechnology for the development and uplifting of our country.
