The 19th International Conference of Islamic World Academy of Sciences (IAS) was held in Pan Pacific Sonargaon hotel, Dhaka, Bangladesh to share scientific and technological innovations with the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) member countries. The IAS, the Foreign Ministry, the Science and Technology Ministry, BD, the University Grants Commission (UGC) and the Bangladesh Academy of Sciences (BAS) have jointly organized the conference. The theme of the 19th International Conference of the IAS was ‘Achieving Socio-economic Development in the Islamic World through Science, Technology and Innovation’. Bangladesh being the host country of the conference will be benefited immensely from the conference as it has created opportunities of sharing Scientifics knowledge and ideas through the presentation of research works of a number of renowned local and foreign participant-scientists. The Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina inaugurated the four-day conference at the Sonargaon Hotel beginning May 6, 2013. On the preceding day, the delegates visited the Bangladesh University of Health Sciences (BUHS) Campus in Mirpur, where there was a video presentation on the life of Late Professor Mohammad Ibrahim the Founder of the Diabetic Center. Prof Ekmeleddin Ihsanoglu, the Secretary General of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), Dr Abdel Salam Majali, the IAS President and former Prime Minister of Jordan, Dr. Dipu Moni, the Bangladesh Foreign Minister, Dr. Moneef Zou’bi, the DG of IAS, Prof. Atta-ur-Rahman, President , Pakistan Academy of Science, Prof. Ahmed Azad, IAS Council member, Prof Dr AK Azad Chowdhury, Chairman of the University Grants Commission (UGC), and Assistant Secretary General COMSTECH spoke on the occasion highlighting the importance of collaborative research work between the member countries. The Conference was expected to be an occasion for the host country (Bangladesh) to showcase its best practices and successes in the broad areas of science, applied science and technology like healthcare delivery system, pharmaceutical industry, climate change, environment, sustainable technology, renewable energy and e-service. The conference provided a forum for building bridges that will facilitate collaboration and cooperation in areas of common interest between scientists from different countries of the Islamic world. A total of 70 foreign delegates from 23 different countries have participated in the conference. Besides, eminent scientists, 60 young science professionals also presented their research papers at the conference. The delegates had a tour of the INCEPTA pharmaceuticals . The delegated were impressed to see around the moat modern facilities employed for the manufacture of sophisticated drugs including human insulin, hepatitis vaccines. Incepta is now one of the leading exporter of Medicines manufactured locally. Another major attraction was a large number of poster presentations mostly by the local participants. At the concluding session the participants who were selected for winning prizes received awards in the form of cash prizes from Dr. AK Azad Chowdhury, Chairman Grants Commission and Prof. Mesbahuddin, the President, Bangladesh Academy of Sciences.
