Identification of differentially expressed genes between sorghum genotypes with contrasting nitrogen stress tolerance by genome-wide transcriptional profiling.

Identification of differentially expressed genes between sorghum genotypes with contrasting nitrogen stress tolerance by genome-wide transcriptional profiling.

Dhaka, 10th March, 2014.  In an article entitled, “Identification of differentially expressed genes between sorghum genotypes with contrasting nitrogen stress tolerance by genome-wide transcriptional profiling,”  published in  the March,  issue of BMC Genomics (vol. 15:179),  M. Gelli  et al. reported to have identified   the N tolerance genes in sorghum. Identification of the genes conditioning low-N tolerance has enabled the researchers understand the molecular mechanism  of low nitrogen tolerance by sorghum cultivars, chosen for the current study. Identification of these genes also facilitated the genomic improvement of the selected sorghum cultivars through marker assisted selection and gene transformation.  In the present study, the authors compared the transcriptomesof root tissues from seven sorghum genotypes havingdifferential response to low-N stress. They observed that the tolerant genotypes adapt to N deficiency by producing greater root mass for efficient uptake of nutrients.
