Outstanding Achievements By Professor Dr. Mohammed Rahmatullah

Professor Dr. Mohammed Rahmatullah was born on August 31, 1951. He completed his Secondary School Certificate Examination from St. Gregory’s High School, Dhaka, Bangladesh in 1967 obtaining 1st Division. He completed his Higher Secondary Certificate Examination from Dhaka Government College, Dhaka in 1969 obtaining 1st Division. He obtained his B.Sc. (Honours) degree in Biochemistry from the University of Dhaka in 1974 securing 1st Class 1st position. He obtained his M.Sc. (Thesis) degree in Biochemistry from the University of Dhaka in 1976 securing 2nd Class 1st position (no 1st Classes were given). He obtained his Ph.D. from the University of Hong Kong in 1982 under the Commonwealth Scholarship program.

His career started as a Lecturer in the Department of Biochemistry, University of Dhaka (1976-78), Commonwealth Research Scholar at the University of Hong Kong (1978-82), Postdoctoral Fellow and later Research Associate at the Department of Biochemistry, Kansas State University in USA (1982-90), Research Fellow at Auburn University, USA (1990-92), and Associate Scientist and later Research Scientist II at the Weis Center for Research, Pennsylvania, USA (1992-2000). He served as Dean, School of Life Sciences as well as Professor and Head of the Department of Biotechnology, Khulna University, Bangladesh from 2000-2002. He joined the University of Development Alternative as Dean, Faculty of Life Sciences in 2002 which he is continuing till present. He also became Pro-Vice Chancellor of the same University in 2008, which he is continuing till present.

His significant research accomplishments include (I) improving determination methods for urea and citrulline (his two papers on this determinations have been cited 291 and 234 times, respectively), (II) discovering a new sub-unit of pyruvate dehydrogenase enzyme, (III) discovering a novel kinase from Candida lipolytica, (IV) carrying out ethnomedicinal surveys on more than 50 tribes of Bangladesh as well as more than 400 folk medicinal practitioners from which data he has built up the largest data base containing more than 800 medicinal plants of the country, (V) conducting surveys on functional and famine food plants, which can play a role as human diet in the changing climate scenario of Bangladesh because of global climate changes, (VI) finding out phytoremediating plants which can effectively remove arsenic, tannery waste, and textile dyes from soil and water, (VII) discovering novel methods of fish cultivation in small ditches and ponds, which can help the marginal farmers of Bangladesh, (VIII) finding out improved methods for clonal propagation of a number of endangered medicinal plant species, and (IX) discovering an extraction procedure for obtaining a crude extract from paddy husk, which can cure bird flu (caused by H5N1 virus), cure a number of fish, shrimp, and poultry diseases, as well has a strong potential for curing pancreatic cancer (he has obtained an international patent on this last discovery). Additionally Professor Rahmatullah’s research has led to identification of a considerable number of anti-diabetic, analgesic, and anti-cancer plants of Bangladesh. Professor Rahmatullah’s research papers have been cited a total of 4542 times (as of March 14, 2014). From 2010 till 2013, Professor Rahmatullah has been the topmost publishing author in SCOPUS abstracted scientific journals. He also has been named as one of the 64 topmost Bangladeshi researchers of the millennium by Bangladesh Research Development Center.
