This is the country’s first attempt to adopt Marker Assisted Approach in rice breeding within the facilities of Plant Biotechnology Laboratory of the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, University of Dhaka in collaboration with BRRI and IRRI. Before that, this approach was applied only at IRRI, where 2 submergence tolerant varieties, BRRI dhan51 and 52 were developed and released in Bangladesh in 2011. Now this approach is readily used in the breeding program at BRRI for breeding for submergence, salinity, heat and cold tolerance etc.
