The master builders that cause tumor growth may provide insights in cancer treatment strategies.
Published in the journals Nature and Science, recent studies conducted by three independent teams of researchers believe that the discovery of cancer stem cells may be a breakthrough in the field of cancer research. Unless the chemotherapy destroys all cancer stem cells, the latter may eventually spark re-growth of the cancer cells. The knowledge in cancer stem cells may help cancer researchers destroy the stem cells in an attempt to cure the pernicious disease. The cancer scientists have demonstrated that the presence of a single malignant cell may lead to relapse of cancerous tumor growth.
