Lignin extraction from biomass with protic ionic liquids

Lignin extraction from biomass with protic ionic liquids

In an article entitled, “Lignin extraction from biomass with protic ionic liquids,” published March, ’14  issue of  Green Chem., (16, 1114-1119), Wesley A. Henderson and four of his associates affiliated to  Ionic Liquids & Electrolytes for Energy Technologies (ILEET) Laboratory, Department of Chemical & Biomolecular Engineering, North Carolina State University, report that they have developed a mehod of simple extraction of lignin from lignocellulosic biomass using a potentially inexpensive protic ionic liquid (PIL).  At the next step the PIL is recovered using distillation leaving the separated lignin and cellulose-rich residues available for further processing.
