GNOBB congratulate A/Prof Akhter Hossain (GNOBB lifetime member) to secure the IDEAS Grant 2020 (~$1.2 million AUD) for 2021-2024 from National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC), Australia.
The grant was awarded to Dr. Akhter to work on Developing novel peptide-based therapeutics and technologies to mitigate fibrosis.
Fibrosis (tissue scarring) is an unmet medical problem that adversely affects both human health and medical devices. It causes organ (e.g., heart, kidney) failure leading to death. Fibrotic encapsulation causes medical device (e.g., surgical mesh) failure. A/Prof Akhter Hossain and his team discovered and patented a peptide molecule that mitigates fibrosis in the short-term. A/Prof Hossain will lead an international team of 15 scientists both from academia and industry to further advance his anti-fibrotic peptide and develop anti-fibrotic therapies and technologies.
It is also worth to mention that the current success rate for national grant application is 9.8%. Congratulations Dr. Akhter !!!. GNOBB wish you all the best for your future research.
