Bioinformatics school for elementary and high school students

GNOBB is organizing an 8-day workshop in association with SPSB (Society for the popularization of Science in Bangladesh) to introduce the concepts of Bioinformatics to school students from Classes 6 to 11. Scheduled during the winter vacation, the workshop will begin on December 11, 2025.

While students often enjoy biology and mathematics, they frequently struggle to see the connection between the two. This lack of integration can sometimes lead students interested in biology to lose focus on the subject when moving into areas like coding. Critically, the foundational role of mathematics and statistics in biology and genetical concepts is rarely highlighted.

Hence, a key goal of this workshop is to enthuse students by demonstrating how mathematics and coding are essential tools for understanding the complex world of biology and solving critical problems. We will show them that the vast sequence data from biological organisms (DNA, RNA, and proteins) can only be effectively managed and analyzed through computational and statistical concepts. The entire learning experience will be delivered in an engaging and fun way.

Instructors will present Bioinformatics as a logical tool (integrating mathematics and coding) for understanding and solving complex biological problems. Participants will explore real-world applications of Bioinformatics, such as curing diseases, predicting future pandemics, designing new drugs, and enabling plant growth in stressed environments.

Ultimately, participants will be encouraged to contemplate how Bioinformatics can be used to decipher the intricate logic underlying biological organisms, including the fine workings of their own bodies.
