Winners of GNOBB award 2021 for scientific achievements

        Dr. Md. Tofazzal Islam

Category 1 (a)-Outstanding Senior Scientist working in  Bangladesh award goes to Dr. Md. Tofazzal Islam for his outstanding scientific contribution to agriculture biotechnology in Bangladesh. Dr. Islam is a professor and founder Director of Institute of Biotechnology and Genetic Engineering (IBGE) of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Agricultural University (BSMRAU), Gazipur. He is an internationally reputed molecular biologist and  biotechnologist, who has published over 100 articles in SCI-indexed journals and received over 5,000 citations with an h-index of 37. He serves as an Academic Editor of PLOS ONE, Associate Editor of Frontiers in Microbiology and Member of Editorial Advisory Board of CABI Reviews. Dr. Islam is an elected Fellow of Bangladesh Academy of Sciences (FBAS) and The World Academy of Sciences (TWAS). In recognition of his valuable contribution to
Bangladesh’s agriculture, Dr. Islam received many awards including a Gold Medal of Bangladesh Academy of Sciences in 2011, UGC Research Awards (2007 and 2011), Commonwealth Innovation Award (UK) 2019, Transformer Road Show Innovation Award from Islamic Development Bank in 2018, ATN Bangla Unnayane Bangladesh Award 2021. Prof. Islam supervised a good number of Postdoc, Ph D and MS fellows and has been mentoring a large number of young scholars. His current research foci include genomics, genome editing and application of plant probiotics for sustainable agriculture and food security in Bangladesh. 

 

      Dr. Mirza Hasanuzzaman

GNOBB award 2021 Category 1 (b)- Outstanding Early to Mid-career Scientist working in Bangladesh award goes to Dr. Mirza Hasanuzzaman for his outstanding scientific contribution to plant stress physiology. Dr. Hasanuzzaman is a professor of Agronomy at Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Dhaka. He has published over 200 articles in SCI-indexed journals and received over 10,500 citations with an h-index of 52. He is acting Associate Editor of Plant Signaling & Behavior (Taylor and Francis), Frontiers in Plant Science (Switzerland), Academic Editor of PeerJ (USA), Plants (MDPI); and Member of the Editorial Board of Plant Physiology and Biochemistry (Elsevier), Annals of Agricultural Sciences (Elsevier). In recognition of his valuable contributions in the field of agriculture and plant physiology, he received numerous awards like World Academy of Science (TWAS) Young Scientist Award 2014, UGC Gold Medal 2018, and Distinguished Scientists Award (2020) from AETDS, India. He is a fellow of the Bangladesh Academy of Sciences (BAS), Royal Society of Biology, and a foreign fellow of The Society for Science of Climate Change and Sustainable Environment. Dr. Hasanuzzaman’s contribution in training the next generation researchers in Bangladesh is highly appreciated.

 

 

            Dr.  Hasan Zaki

GNOBB award 2021 Category 2 (a)- Outstanding Senior Non-resident Bangladeshi Scientist award goes to Dr.  Hasan Zaki for his contribution to health science. Dr. Zaki is a tenured Associate Professor at the Department of  Pathology, UT Southwestern Medical Center, USA. He received the prestigious research funding from the National Institute of Health (NIH), American Cancer Society (ACS),and Cancer Prevention and Research Institute of Texas (CPRIT). Dr. Zaki has been consistently publishing in high impact journals like Immunity, Cancer Cell, PNAS, e-life etc. He has published over 35 journal articles with an H-index of 21 . His research articles have been cited more than 3500 times. He is also recepient of several awards like career development award from Crohn's and Colitis foundation of America (2012), New Investigator award from Amrican Cancer Society (2014), and Research Scholar award from American Cancer Society (2021). Dr. Zaki’s research topics are very relevant to many of the disease burdens felt worldwide.

 

     Dr. Mohammad Ariful Islam

GNOBB award 2021 Category 2 (b)- Outstanding Early-Mid career Non-resident Bangladeshi Scientist goes to Dr. Mohammad Ariful Islam for his contribution to biomedical engineering and pharmaceutical science. Dr. Islam is currently working as a Principal Scientist and Sub-Team Lead at mRNA Center of Excellence in Sanofi Pasteur, USA. He has published more than 35 journal articles with an H index of 23. His research articles have been cited more than 2300 times. He also holds 4 international patents. He serves in the editorial board of Journal of Frontiers in Bioengineering and Biotechnology (Biomaterials section), Advanced Materials Science and Technology, and Insights of Scientific and Biomedical Research Journal. In recognition of his valuable contributions in the field of RNA vaccines and theraputics, he received numerous awards like The Most Rising Young Bangladeshi Biotechnologists from NYBB, 2020; Recognition Award from Brigham and Women’s Hospital / Harvard Medical School (2017); Discover Brigham Research Excellence Award from Brigham and Women’s Hospital / Harvard Medical School (2016); Award for Research Excellence from Seoul National University (2013). Dr. Islam`s research area has significant potential to contribute for mitigating many of the debilitating diseases in the world.
