In an article entitled, “RAPD markers for identification of sex in pointed gourd (Trichosanthes dioica Roxb.)” published in the April issue of the Indian J. Biotech, Kumar Sanjeev, BD Singh and DP Sinha employed decamer markers to distinguish male and female pointed gourd (locally known as ‘potol’). They observed that male individuals are characterized by a 1000 bp amplification product from the primer OPC05 while females produced 400 bp amplification product from the primer OPC14. They also noticed that another marker designated OPN011030 was present in male and female plants but conspicuously absent in parthenocarpic (seedless line). In some plant species such as Rumex acetosa heteromorphic sex chromosomes characterize the male and female plants, but in pointed gourd, papaw etc sex chromosomes cannot be distinguished from autosomes. In this situation application of molecular techniques such as RAPD is very helpful. This technique should be simplified so that Bangladeshi farmers while working in the field can remove the male plants in excess of the number required for pollination of the female plant
