In an article entitled, “Polar protein transport between apical and basal cells during tobacco early embryogenesis”, published in the February 2013 issue of Plant Cell Rep. (32(2):285-91), the lead author Li S. along with three associates at the Hybrid Rice Lab., Wuhan University, China report in tobacco of unidirectional trafficking from basal- toward the apical cell. Using photoactivatable green fluorescent protein, they found unidirectional movements of photosyhthates from basal to the apical cell. They discovered the presence of a large number of plasmodesmata in the walls connecting the basal and apical cells facilitating cell-to-cell communication between apical and basal cells during early embryogenesis. Their data show a possible unique method of cell-to-cell communication between apical and basal cells during early embryogenesis.
